NIWA tsunami animation
NIWA have created a fascinating Wellington Harbour tsunami simulation modelled on the 1855 earthquake event on the Wairarapa Fault. This simulation provided the basis for the earthquake and tsunami that was featured in the Aftershock tele-drama. James Goff, Senior Scientist at NIWA, talks us through the simulation. See what effect the tsunami wave has on Lyall Bay, Miramar and Evans Bay in particular. NIWA is the National Institute of Water & Atmospheric Research, New Zealand. More videos www.aftershock.co.nz

1855 a young city devastated
In 1855 an 8.2 magnitude earthquake and 8 metre high tsunami struck Wellington. The quake and tsunami portrayed in the Aftershock tele-drama is directly modelled on the 1855 event. James Goff, Senior Scientist at NIWA, talks about the 1855 quake that devastated the young city. How would modern day Wellington cope with an event that size? Aftershock TV3 trailer (8.30pm Wednesday 8 October)
Aftershock follows the fortunes of four groups of people in the minutes, hours and days after Wellington is destroyed by the big one a magnitude 8.2 earthquake and subsequent tsunami. Buried office workers who must pull together; strangers, caught by the tsunami on the ruined motorway, who put themselves in danger to save another; a mother who must reunite her family; and, at the centre of the rescue operation, the controller bunkered down at the Wellington Emergency Management Office. www.aftershock.co.nz

Are we overdue for a big quake?
The last major earthquake on the Wellington fault was 100s of years ago. Recurrence for the Wellington fault is somewhere between 500 and 1,000 years. Graham Leonard, Natural Hazards Scientist at GNS, discusses the probability of another quake happening soon. More Aftershock videos and info: www.aftershock.co.nz

Economic consequences
How will a tsunami effect the economy? James Goff, Senior Scientist at NIWA, discusses the unavoidable damage to shipping navigation channels and the significant economic impact that will have on Wellington city. More Aftershock videos and info: www.aftershock.co.nz

In the path of 'the wave'
James Goff, Senior Scientist at NIWA, talks about the various ways houses can be built to reduce the effect of a tsunami. More Aftershock videos and info: www.aftershock.co.nz

Life in the aftermath
After a major earthquake hundreds (if not thousands) of displaced people will need to be housed and cared for. Graham Leonard, Natural Hazards Scientist at GNS, says the entire country needs to be prepared to assist in the aftermath of a major quake. More Aftershock videos and info: www.aftershock.co.nz

Rebuilding after a quake
A shortage of services, materials and labour in the earthquake zone will impact on the speed of the citys rebuild. Graham Leonard, Natural Hazards Scientist at GNS, says Wellington will never be the same. More Aftershock videos and info: www.aftershock.co.nz

Tsunami clean up
What needs to be taken into account in the clean up after an earthquake and tsunami? James Goff, Senior Scientist at NIWA, discusses the impact on the environment. More Aftershock videos and info: www.aftershock.co.nz
