NIWA tsunami models

You need to a flashplayer enabled browser to view this YouTube video

NIWA have created a fascinating Wellington Harbour tsunami simulation modelled on the 1855 earthquake event on the Wairarapa Fault. This simulation provided the basis for the earthquake and tsunami that was featured in the Aftershock tele-drama. James Goff, Senior Scientist at NIWA, talks us through the simulation. See what effect the tsunami wave has on Lyall Bay, Miramar and Evans Bay in particular. NIWA is the National Institute of Water & Atmospheric Research, New Zealand. More videos www.aftershock.co.nz

Cool, animation. Would like to see one for the west coast of Auckland. The show was pretty good aswell. Would’ve liked to seen Wellington a year on.

i watched the show and thought it was good, and the video thing on youtube showing the event of a big wave,
however i have one problem with its all to do with Wellington city itself, not much if any at all was said about the hutt valley, which in turn didn’t make the programme hit home like it should have. I would love to see an animation or something to see what could happen to the hutt vally and its surrounding suburbs

I agree - the programme and video are very important and have affected our household and friends soo much, that we are having an Earthquake meeting this weekend to go over what to do, etc BUT I also think that they should include a video on the Hutt Valley region. We all work and live in the Hutt Valley and it would be VERY important to our planning if we knew the certain suburbs that are likely to be more effected than others in the Earthquake and Tsunami. At the moment we assume most of Petone through to Taita will be effected by the Tsunami - but Upper Hutt should be ok. Also that all the hill suburbs, Korokoro, Belmont, Kelson, etc and Totora Park (suburds directly over the fault line) will be places we do not want to meet up in. If GNS/NIWA could make a demo model on the Hutt Valley, we would find it very valuable.
